Choosing the right concrete grinder can make a big difference to how quickly, safely and smoothly your project runs. A machine that is too small can turn a simple job into a long, frustrating process. A machine that is too large may be unnecessary, harder to power, and harder to manage on smaller sites.
At Peninsula Products, we generally break our grinder hire range into three main sizes:
- Large grinders
- Medium grinders
- Compact grinders
Each machine has its place depending on the size of the job, the type of finish you want, the power available on site, and how much concrete you need to remove.
1. Large grinders: Best for big areas, polishing and high production work
Our large grinder range includes machines such as the Husqvarna PG 830 RC and Husqvarna PG 680.
These machines are designed for serious concrete grinding, polishing and large floor preparation jobs. The PG 830 RC has a grinding width of around 800mm and weighs approximately 652kg, while the PG 680 has a grinding width of 680mm and weighs around 385–400kg depending on the model. Both are three-phase machines, which means they require suitable three-phase power on site or a suitable generator, like this one we have for hire: 33Kva Generator.
These grinders are best suited to:
- Mechanical polished concrete
- Larger grind and seal projects
- Commercial floor preparation
- Large glue or coating removal jobs
- Jobs where production speed matters
The biggest advantage of a large grinder is productivity. The extra weight, power and grinding width allow the machine to cover more floor area and cut more aggressively than smaller machines. This is especially useful on large slabs, commercial spaces, warehouses, showrooms, factories and bigger residential projects.
As a guide, large grinders can suit jobs from around 100sqm and above, depending on site access, power availability and the type of work being completed.
For grind and seal jobs, a large grinder can generally process much more area per day than a smaller grinder. For mechanical polishing, they are also a much better option because they produce a flatter and more consistent finish over larger areas.
The main thing to check before choosing a large grinder is power. These machines normally require three-phase power, so they are not suitable for every site. Access is also important, as the machines are heavy and need suitable entry into the work area.
2. Medium grinders: best all-round option for most DIY and trade jobs
Our medium grinder option is the Floorex 480 Satellite Grinder with vacuum.
This is one of the most popular options because it is powerful enough for a wide range of projects but still runs on standard single-phase 10 amp power. The Floorex Satellite 480 has a 480mm grinding path, and the single-phase model is designed for 230V / 10 amp power.
This machine is best suited to:
- DIY garage grind and seal projects
- Residential concrete grinding
- Small to medium commercial floors
- Floor preparation
- Tile glue removal
- Coating removal
- Light polishing work
- General concrete clean-up before sealing
For most home garages, sheds, patios, workshops and small commercial spaces, the 480 Satellite is usually the best starting point. It has enough weight and grinding width to get the job done properly, but it is still manageable for a capable DIY user.
The major advantage of this machine is that it can run from normal power on most sites. That makes it a practical choice where three-phase power is not available.
As a guide, this machine is usually suitable for jobs from around 20sqm to 100sqm, depending on the coating, glue, concrete hardness and finish required.
For a standard garage grind and seal, this is normally the machine we recommend. It can be paired with aggressive diamonds for the first cut, then finer diamonds before sealing.
3. Compact grinders: best for small areas, edges and light floor prep
Our compact grinder option is the Husqvarna PG 280 with vacuum.
The PG 280 is a single-disc grinder with a 280mm grinding width. It runs on single-phase power and weighs approximately 70–72kg depending on the model. Husqvarna lists the PG 280 as suitable for smaller to medium concrete areas, surface preparation and coating removal.
This machine is best suited to:
- Small floor preparation jobs
- Small glue removal jobs
- Tight access areas
- Edges and detail areas
- Small rooms
- Small patch repairs
- Preparing concrete before coating
The compact grinder is much easier to move around than a large or medium grinder, which makes it useful where access is tight or the job area is small.
However, it is not the best choice for larger grind and seal projects. Because it only has a 280mm grinding width and less weight, it will take much longer to complete larger areas. It also will not flatten the floor as effectively as a larger planetary grinder.
As a guide, the compact grinder is best kept to smaller jobs, spot grinding, glue removal, edge work and areas where a larger machine cannot easily fit.
Which grinder should I choose?
For most DIY garage or shed projects, the Floorex 480 Satellite is usually the best choice. It gives a good balance of power, production speed and ease of use, while still running on standard single-phase power.
For large commercial or industrial projects, the Husqvarna PG 830 RC or PG 680 is the better option, provided three-phase power and suitable access are available.
For small areas, edges, tight spaces or light glue removal, the Husqvarna PG 280 is a practical compact option.
Don’t forget the vacuum and diamonds
Choosing the grinder is only one part of the job. You also need the correct dust extractor and the right diamond tooling.
The diamond selection depends on:
- Concrete hardness
- Type of coating or glue being removed
- Whether you are doing floor prep, grind and seal or polishing
- How aggressive the first cut needs to be
- The finish you want before sealing
For example, a grind and seal project will usually start with aggressive diamonds to open the concrete, then move to finer diamonds before the sealer is applied.
Using the wrong diamonds can make the grinder feel slow, leave scratches, or make the job harder than it needs to be. We will issue a separate blog to discuss diamond tooling options.
